For certain undersecured Standard 7(a) loans, SBA guidance addresses life insurance for specific principal and key-owner situations. The lender evaluates the borrower’s role in operations and the collateral supporting the transaction.

7(a) Small and SBA Express

These programs can follow a lender’s written policy for comparable conventional commercial loans. The $350,000 figure does not by itself create an automatic life-insurance requirement.

Ask the right question

Ask your lender which underwriting path applies and whether the condition comes from an SBA program requirement, the lender’s credit policy, or both. Then obtain the required insured person, amount, term and assignment instructions in writing.
